"Snow" falling at the Brea Civic Center, Dec. 8, 2011

Snow fell in Brea on Thursday night, for the first time since 1949!

Hundreds of Breans gathered last night in front of the Civic Center, filling seats and bleacher space, more children than adults. And the reason we were all there? The Annual City of Brea Holiday Tree Lighting! And whether you call it a Holiday or call it Christmas, the city provided a program that satisfied everyone's tastes.

After a welcome from the evenings emcee, Mayor Pro-Tem Don Schweitzer, the entertainment began with the talented young people from the Country Hills Elementary School Cougar Choir, directed by Debbie Shin, singing "Winter Wonderland", followed by "Jingle Bell Rock" and "Santa Claus is Coming to Town".

When their opening set of music was complete, our emcee directed us to practice shouting, "Light the tree" and after a few practice shouts, the tree lit-up in cheerful Christmas lights to ooohs and aaahs from the crowd.

Next, The Singing Pastors, (Pastor Doug and Brenda Green from North Hills Church, Pastor Davis Hill from Firehouse of Prayer, Pastor Mike O'Brien from Downtown Chapel, Brea Foursquare Church, and Pastor Dave Rader from Brea Baptist Church), were introduced and after a short, very funny song about shipping holiday packages, the four (plus one on piano), engaged us with Christmas Carole's that reminded the crowd of the Reason for the Season.

The Pastors started singing "Let It Snow" after our emcee reminded us that the last time it snowed in Brea was over 60-years ago. Just then, to the sounds of squeals of delight from young and old, snow flurries started to fall from the sky! The sky next to the Civic Center roof, where they had installed foam machines that launched simulated snow into the air and down onto the crowd below. How fun! While children tried to catch the "snow" in their hands, grown-ups laughed and smiled and enjoyed the sight. Snow in Brea, falling from the sky!

The Darden Family, a very talented family of singers and performers, rounded out the evenings entertainment with the final song of their set, "Here Comes Santa Claus".  That's when we heard the sirens, as Santa was escorted in style to the Civic Center, riding on Brea's own historic Seagraves Fire Truck, with a contingent of Brea Police Department's finest, ensuring he arrived on time.

After a short greeting, Santa headed to the Brea Library where he was ready to listen to Christmas wishes from young and old.

What a fun night! What a beautiful tree! What a marvelous program!

Entertainment before and after the festivities was provided by KOST 103.5, broadcasting Christmas music live from the Civic Center.

The City of Brea extends special thanks to Brea Corner Bakery, Brea Firefighters Association, Brea Home Depot, Brea Lions, Brea Vons, Mary Harrington, La Neve Photography, Memory Garden Memorial Park, and North Hills Church.
