Brea-Olinda High School Junior, Jake Evans, is the President of the Best Buddies Program at the high school. The program encourages students with intellectual and developmental disabilities with one-to-one friendships with other high school students. Best Buddies crosses the invisible line that too often separates those with disabilities from those without.

Jake and Jonathan Jonathan Crampton (his buddy) were paired up one year ago. Since then their friendship has flourished. The Brea Chapter sent them both to a Best Buddies Leadership Conference at Indiana University last month. Jake was sent as a Leader and Jonathan as an Ambassador. They roomed together in a dorm on campus and met lots of people like themselves while participating in many workshops and events. Because of their close friendship they were asked to give a presentation at a Best Buddies Fundraiser hosted by Maria Shriver. The fundraiser took place on August 18th at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills. Entertainment Tonight was there along with a host of celebrities and some politicians too, including Antonio Villaraigosa (who spoke after Jake and Jonathan).

Their presentation spoke of how they met and were paired in the Best Buddy Program and have become best friends since. Jake’s mother said, ”They do things outside of school, often communicate through Facebook and have had a great experience at the Leadership Conference. This is such a great example of how powerful and rewarding this program is and what a positive impact it has on our students today. When I attended the end of the year banquet I heard the students with special needs saying they like to go to school now because of this program.“
