History of Brea's Charlie the Clock: Brea’s Charlie the Clock or Brea Clock now resides in Brea Downtown at the corner of Birch and Madrona Streets, across the street from Macallan’s Public House.

The clock appeared on Brea Blvd. in 1975 to promote Charlie’s Clock Shop in the former Brea Hotel building.

For years it was known as “Charlie’s Clock” because it stood outside of the clock shop. When the shop closed, the City of Brea purchased the clock, by then a local and beloved landmark. During the transformation of the Downtown, the clock went into storage and stayed there until recent years when it was very carefully restored with an exact reproduction of the clock’s original clock face. A bit of neon was added so it is more visible at night. The casing around the face and post are all original.

Of final note: As a long time Brea resident and public relations professional, I commissioned Brea artist Heather Ashlyn Collins to create a cutout of the beloved Brea clock to help remind everyone of Brea’s 100th Anniversary in the Year 2017, and kicking off Brea’s 98th birthday with The Face of Brea Photo Contest! A special thanks to Terri Daxon of Daxon Marketing Communications.

We can't wait to see your fun photos with our dapper looking gent, Charlie!

                                                        Enthusiastically,

                                                          Carolyn Campbell

  • The Old Brea Tower Records: Library, history exhibit – it’s anyone’s guess

    5 years ago by

Tower Records closed its doors in Brea Downtown on November 6, 2006.

Unlike some cities that have numerous “ghost signs” around town, Brea’s Tower Records is practically the only one people will immediately point out, especially due to the fact that this November 9, it will be seven years since Tower Records closed in Brea. And of course its location is very visible sitting on the corner of Brea Boulevard and Birch Street in Brea Downtown.

Around 2 ½ months ago we learned from the Friends of the Brea Library Facebook fan page, that the library may occupy the space. We immediately posted the information and received an overwhelming response on Beautiful Brea Old & New (BBON) Facebook fan page. Many people favored the idea and expanded further on developing the thought. There was also a lot of brainstorming with great suggestions on what type of business would complement the vacant downtown location.

Since the majority of people who commented on BBON supported the Library plan, we have put in a call to do a follow-up to inquire if any progress has been made.

Or will “Good Old Brea” get a visit from  Russell Solomon, the founder of Tower Records, who is planning to archive the history of his Sacramento based-chain stores. "Ideally, we want to formulate an exhibit that will go to cities where Tower really had a presence," said Greig Best, executive director of the Sacramento History Foundation. A traveling Tower Records exhibit is planned to make its debut by 2015. What are the chances, though the place is still vacant and obviously ideal for the exhibit!

One thing for sure, its ghostly site becomes even more noticeable every year in September and October when a Halloween store sets up shop in Brea Downtown.

    We’ll keep you posted.
