Imagine enjoying shopping time while your vehicle is fueled, well, charged that is. Starting this month, Brea Mall shoppers who own Electric Vehicles will soon be able to plug in and charge their cars in 30 minutes, making a trip to the mall a more inviting experience. Simon, a global leader in the retail real estate industry, and NRG eVgo (ee-vee-go), a subsidiary of NRG Energy, Inc., recently announced the installation of new electric car fast-charging Freedom Station® sites at four Orange County Simon shopping centers: The Shops at Mission Viejo, Brea Mall, Westminster Mall and The Outlets at Orange. Brea Mall’s Freedom Station is scheduled to open any day now and will be located in the parking lot near California Pizza Kitchen, on the south side of the newly renovated center. How’s that for progress? Will you be buying an Electric Vehicle anytime soon?

  • Brea Mall Old & New by Carolyn Campbell

    A Sneak Peek….

Due to come out within the next few days, Inside Brea Magazine’s Hello, Spring Season issue features my story about the Brea Mall, titled: Brea Mall Where People Meet, Greet and Congregate. You’ll find it on pages 14 -17.

New to Brea Mall: Tesla Motors electric vehicles, located on the bottom floor near Williams-Sonoma.

Back in early January I met with Brea Mall’s General Manager Rajeev Chhabra, and Director of Marketing and Business Development Anna Cotter to gather information for the story. They were both very welcoming and hospitable, sending me home with a nice goodie bag.

Instead of focussing entirely on Brea Mall with its recent major renovation since opening its doors 37 years ago, I decided to combine the old with the new in writing the story, so I contacted Susan Gaede whose husband Rex Gaede was the mayor during the grand opening of the mall back in September of 1977. I also contacted Former City Manager, Wayne Wedin, who along with Gaede played a major role in 'The Making of a Mall,' as seen on a video produced by Album of Life for Beautiful Brea Old & New.

Brea Mall's Official Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting Ceremony in 1977. From left, Miss Brea Laura Shipkey, Former Mayor Rex Gaede, and Master of Ceremonies: Actor Robert Vaughn, best known as “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.”

I hope you enjoy the article. It will take you back to the fall of 1968 when the idea of building a mall was put into action, the challenges it faced in its recent renovation, the first major celebrity attraction at the mall, and finally its yearly special event happenings.

  • Safe and Sound at Brea Gateway Downtown

    5 years ago by

From left, Ivan Magdaleno and Joseph Acevedo standing outside of their office at Brea Gateway Downtown.

Brea is boring, says Joseph Acevedo and Ivan Magdaleno, security guards at Brea Gateway Downtown. Aside from being a Northern Orange County destination for shopping, dining and entertainment, their assessment is on the mark. Are we complaining? I think not!

Both young men aspire to be police officers. They take their job seriously working different shifts that overlap an hour each day. Anyone who frequents downtown has passed their office, which is very nondescript other than looking like a tiny janitorial supply room next to Cost Plus World Market. Open the door and there is one lawn chair and a bicycle.

Each day they set out on foot or bicycle patrolling the center, checking each building, looking for graffiti (which seldom occurs), giving out tickets for those who double park, park in handicapped spots and are not disabled, and exceed the 3-day maximum parking limit.

Other than a homeless man who for a short period of time was staying at Brea Gateway Downtown, there really haven’t been any problems, with the exception of the children who run amok riding their skateboards and bicycles. When confronted by Joseph and Ivan, most of the kids disregard the notice. So that is an ongoing battle that Joseph and Ivan are diligently on top of.

Just like their office, you may not take notice, but they’re keeping us safe and deserve praise for their good job. No doubt they will make fine police officers someday.

Thanks to their efforts, we’re boring.
