Former Brea City Councilman Don Symmes died of Alzheimer’s disease June 27 in Temecula, Ca. Symmes, a former 50 year resident of Brea, founded Little League in North Orange County and served as District 56 adminstrator

Former  Brea City Councilman Don Symmes, 88, died June 27 in Temecula, Ca. after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s diease.

Symmes is best known for being the founder of Little League Baseball and served as District 56 Administrator. He was honored for his dediction to Little League  for 35 years on June 15, 1991 when Brea declared the date as “Don Symmes Day.

Don liked to joke and was famous for his rhyming and dog-barking skills. He enjoyed traveling to all 50 states, Austrilia, New Zealand with wife Maxine, who passed away  in 2008. They had been married for 65 years.

Many students will remember Don who was born in Kearney, Nebraska because he taught history, math, health education, and drivers education  at  Brea, La Habra, Troy, and Sonora High Schools. His 40 year teaching career began in Nebraska where he taught all sports and earned a Masters degree.

He was owner of AAAADriving school for 20 years.

Don joined the Marine Corps and served in the Pacific in World War II.

His five children Kyle, Kathryn, Kristine. Kevin, and Kollen, their spouses and 9 grandchildren celebrate and mourn his passing. Rosary: July 5, 7 p.m. at Loma Vista Cemetery, Fullerton;Mass July 6, 9:30 at St. Angela Merici followed by internment at Losa Vista
