Kiwanis Club of Brea Celebrates 60th Anniversary

The Kiwanis Club of Brea recently celebrated their 60th anniversary at Cedar Creek Inn. Local dentist Dr. Tom Green was Dinner Master of Ceremonies and Speaker. He spoke about the Club history from 1951 to the present. “Quite interesting to learn that women were not allowed in the club until 1987 and club meetings were once held at Bruno’s Deli. Can't imagine making $20,000 in one fundraiser but the club did just that in 1995! In 1999 we had 56 members!....It would be great to have that number membership again.” Charles Phillips noted in the Kiwanis newsletter. Kathy Rone was the first woman allowed to join in 1989. Anita Galins became the first woman president in 1993. In the year 1971 Boy Scout Troop 801 was chartered. In the early years the club was more for networking and social connections.

Joe Salazar was presented the 'Kiwanian of The Year' award for his unselfish and distinguish service as Club President in 2010-2011 & Dennis O'Hern the President's award for, being the best Club Secretary anywhere. By the way during the Division 30 Installation, Joe Salazar received the prestigious 'Sho Yamata Award for distinguished Service and Dennis O'Hern the Gary Mayer award for the Club Secretary making significant contributions to his Club and Division 30.

The Kiwanis Club had by far the best service hours participation in Division 30 this year. They provided over 4300 hours serving our community and the children of Brea. The top five participating members per all events were: Dennis O"Hern 76%..Joe Salazar 62%..Charlie Phillips 62%..and Allan Nakamura 49%.

Breans especially enjoy the club’s traditional Country Fair Pancake Breakfast, Spelling and Essay Contest, and Easter Egg Hunt. The club motto is “We Build” and the club has given over $30,000 to the Boys and Girls Club. Brea Olinda High School students who want to help the community belong to the Kiwanis Key Club.

The Incoming President is Dr. Isabell Choi. Interested in joining the club that meets at 7:15 a.m. on Thursday give her a call at (562)881-4141.Allan Nakamura is President Elect. Among the welcome and distinguished dinner guests were Mayor Ray Moore and Councilman Marty Simonoff and their wives. Outgoing Division 30 Lt.Governor, Debbie Schiebel, and incoming Lt. Governor, Mike Fields. Ray, Marty, Debbie and Roy were all involved in handing out awards, commendations and installing Board and new officers.
