  • Simon Youth Foundation announces $1 million in scholarships for students

    5 years ago by

The first quarter of this year will bring a lot of good news to those college bound high school seniors waiting to hear back from the colleges that they applied to. At this time, many students are applying for scholarships to help fund their education. With that in mind, look into Simon Youth Foundation Community Scholarships

Simon Youth Foundation Community Scholarships are awarded through the Simon Youth Scholarships program, established in 1989, and in partnership with local Simon properties. The application period is open now until Saturday, January 11, 2014. Interested students can stop by Simon Guest Services at Brea Mall to acquire a copy of a scholarship application.

Graduating seniors in the class of 2014 who live within 50 miles of a Simon property are eligible. The program will award a one-time scholarship of up to $1,500 to students who plan to enroll in an accredited college, university, vocational or technical school.

In 2013, the Simon Youth Scholarships program awarded $1.1 million to 389 students nationwide.

              Good luck!

  • Welcome to one-stop shop – City of Brea

    6 years ago by

TERRI DAXON The wild and crazy shopping season has begun, and the best place to go is right here in Brea. Where else can you find such a wealth of shopping choices? There are the beautiful, recently Mall, our Brea Downtown, the Brea Marketplace across from the mall, Brea Gateway Center, plus several other shopping areas up and down Imperial Highway and elsewhere in our city.

While Brea has many unique shops, there also are chain stores, including a few big-box ones such as Target, Walmart and Home Depot. Sure, you can shop the chains in many cities, but the sales tax dollars come back to Brea only if the merchandise was purchased here.

Why is shopping in Brea so important? I asked Heidi Gallegos, the new executive director of the Brea Chamber of Commerce.

“Shopping Brea first keeps our dollars in the community in order to support public safety, capital improvements as well as retain programs that are unique to the culture of Brea,” Gallegos said via email. “We encourage shoppers to keep our dollars in Brea and shop Brea first.” Brea is definitely a shopping destination. Brea Mall is Orange County’s fourth largest mall in sales tax revenue.

Keeping those shopping dollars here makes a big difference. According to Brea’s June 2012 fiscal report, Brea’s sales tax revenue has increased 4.4 percent over the previous fiscal year, which is pretty good. Sales tax for general retail sales, such as department stores, apparel shops, home stores and other retailers , made up 46.7 percent of the increase.

According to Bill Gallardo, Brea’s administrative services director, in Brea you are charged 8 percent sales tax on taxable items. Of that 8 percent, only 1 percent stays in Brea. “The rest goes elsewhere, mostly to the state,” Gallardo said via email.

So how does that work? Gallardo said, for example, when you make a $100 purchase, you pay $8 in sales tax. Of the $8, Brea gets $1. That doesn’t sound like much, but in fiscal year 2012, it totaled $19 million. That’s a lot of buying in Brea, folks.

What about online sales, such as at Amazon, that include California sales tax? Does the city benefit from those sales? Yes, but it isn’t much. Amazon charges Brea and other Orange County customers the 8 percent rate, and the 1 percent is sent to the state. “Then the state divides that local money based on your city’s percentage of total sales in the county,” Gallardo said. What that breaks down to is that Brea gets a measly 3.5 percent of the 1 percent. So shopping locally, rather than online, makes better dollar sense for our city. And while you are shopping in Brea, visit the new Santa’s village on the lower level of Brea Mall. It is one of the most attractive I’ve ever seen in a mall. Plus, it gives the kids something to marvel at while Dad checks out the Tesla showroom a few shops away.

Another successful shopping spree – Kiwanis Club of Brea

    6 years ago by

The following article was written by Charlie Phillips, secretary of the Kiwanis Club of Brea. Charlie elaborates on the gratifying details about the Annual Brea Kiwanis Back to School Shopping Spree event. It was an amazing event but as Charlie said, you had to be there. When the community pulls together, anything can be accomplished! Photos by Charlie Phillips.

Back to School Shopping Spree....Few projects during the year provide the warm satisfaction as our 'Back to School Shopping Spree' for children that need that little extra to start them off in the new school year. The sponsored 'Shopping Spree' for these children is a project with a heart. At day break, Saturday September 14, children with their parents, Kiwanis and community volunteers started arriving at the Brea Mall JC Penney's to participate in a shopping event that would provide 58+ children with needed school clothing and supplies.

The event started with ready volunteer escorts, apprehensive parents and excited children ready to shop. At the end of three hours shopping the volunteers beamed with pride, the parents grateful and a few in tears but all the children smiled with, "look what I got." You had to be there to appreciate the accomplishment and pride the event provided.

The event success would not have been complete if it were not for the volunteer support and especially the helpful service from 11+ JC Penny's service specialists. Escort volunteers, Parents, children shoppers and Kiwanis thank JCP for their special sales pricing that allowed the children to receive values well above the $ amount allowed for each child. A special thank you goes out to JCP Lucy Rau and Chaunte Humes store and resource leaders and for Flurinda Valenzuela, juniors service specialist, for her exceptional service to the children.

There were approximately 170 parents, children and volunteers at the 'Shopping Spree'. Brea and Placentia Kiwanis thank the 24 Club members, 17 family members and friends, 7 Brea Olinda HS Key Club and 5 Fullerton Circle K volunteers that helped throughout the Back to School shopping.

Brea Kiwanis sponsored 48+ children recommended by the Brea School District and Placentia Kiwanis had 10 children recommended from the Church of the Nazarene in Placentia. Funding for the Brea children was received from Brea Kiwanis, La Floresta Foundation, Merrill Lynch, JCP, Mother's Market, Citizens Business Bank and other individual contributors. Placentia funding was received from Placentia Kiwanis. A special thank you goes out to La Floresta for their generous $2000 contribution.
