At 199 seats, “the Brea Curtis Theatre is a teeny tiny theatre,” says Tiina Mittler, Managing Director at Curtis Theatre. But they do well with the type of shows they book. They started their “See Us Shine” 2011/12 season with Charo and will end this weekend with a sold out show featuring the identical twin sons of Ricky Nelson, Mathew and Gunner, in Ricky Nelson Remembered.

“Booking an artist is similar to reserving an exhibit,” Tiina explains. Every year she attends a booking convention in search of shows that will have a connection with the community. Unlike Orange County Performing Arts Center and Cerritos Performing Arts Theatre, the Curtis Theatre is challenged with the artists they contract given their very intimate venue.

In the case of Mathew and Gunner Nelson, It took two years for Tinna to schedule their show at the Curtis Theatre. There are a lot of factors, according to Tiina. For instance, there’s the budget, their schedule, as many artists who are not local have to be booked while touring through Orange County. On the other hand, the Curtis Theatre is situated good being outside of Los Angeles, making it an easy drive for local artists to commute to the Curtis Theatre. But most importantly, Tiina says, it’s building a relationship, familiarity, and the trust level needed with an entertainment agent in order to achieve good results. Basically, each deal has to present the right set of circumstances.

The work never ends, but for Tiina it’s not a job, it’s a passion for doing what she loves! So after the season, it’s on with the show. The Curtis Theatre will be busy at Brea Fest on Friday, August 24, Brea Concerts in the Park starting on Wednesday, July 11, Oliver, youth theatre production, on the 19th of July, and then it’s the opening of Season 2012/13 on September 14.

If you were not able to purchase tickets to Ricky Nelson Remembered, remember to call early to buy tickets!! And for those who have tickets, have a spectacular time this Father’s Day weekend watching the performance of Mathew and Gunner Nelson in honor of their dad, Ricky Nelson!
